Magic in Childhood

I’m continuing my close listen of BBC Sounds’ Witch podcast. In episode one, presenter India Rakusen asks the question, “Who are you? … How do you know you’re a witch?”

She tackles the issue of the label. It’s been used to kill people–people who were not witches. (I highly recommend reading the linked article. Some fascinating, disturbing history.) A person shouldn’t claim the label lightly.

Rakusen mentions magical things she did as a child–she hunted for fairies at the bottom of the garden, she kept a book of spells to try with her sister, with whom she also “built whole worlds.” Many of us experiment with magic as children, and then we grow out of it.

What about you?

I believed a witch lived down the road in an abandoned house in the woods. I kept hoping to find a portal to another world. I absolutely wished upon stars.

What magic did you play with in childhood?
