art for cash

When is art worth money? What makes a doodle worth framing and selling? I have no clue–at least when it comes to my own work. And of course how much is art worth?

I can’t even answer these questions about my “real” work. I can’t even tell a student how much I get paid for tutoring without turning red and stumbling for words–as if I’m somehow bad for even asking to be paid.

So, I’m supposed to plan for this art show next summer and I can’t imagine deciding on a price for a picture.

One way of figuring out a price is to add the cost of supplies and your time. Your time is worth a certain amount of money every hour. If you give yourself $25 an hour and spend 4 hours on it then that is $100 plus the cost of supplies. This is a logcial way to find a price for a painting without emotions becoming involved. The more your work becomes in demand the more you can pay yourself per hour. Make peace with money and realize that if you were working for someone else they would pay you a certain amount every hour. You deserve to get paid for your work.

Another way to look at a “doodle” is that a “doodle” is usually cheaper to buy than a painting. Painting are more expensive and some people can’t afford them but they may like your work and they can afford a “doodle”. You could create small images of your work, which could be sold for less but with a tag on the back with your website address. That way if someone saw your smaller image and liked the work you might be able to sell a bigger image.

Keep the twenty dollar idea in your mind because they lead to bigger sells. Make small images that cost $20 to promote larger images and give people a chance to support you. The images will be seen by other people leading to selling larger items.

Thanks for your comment. In theory I know I deserve to get paid for my work, but in practice, when someone is looking directly at me and asking for a price, I freeze up and become speechless. But what you say makes perfect sense.
