hypocrite

I don’t listen to my own advice. Of course, the world is full of people who don’t follow their own words of wisdom–but that’s no excuse.

I’m horribly stuck in the last pages of my novel. I can’t figure it out. I stare at the screen, type a sentence, and give up. The entire novel is ridiculous and only a lunatic would read it. The keyboard is not nearly hard enough to bang my head on.

Well, now that I’ve gotten this out of my system, I shall go stare at the computer screen until I give up and go to bed at a decent hour.

  1. Oh what did I read recently? Here it is:

“Finishing a book is just like you took a child out in the back yard and shot it.”
    – Truman Capote

So I guess you’re not alone in finding it hard to finish a book.

Keep on keeping on!! YOU can do this. YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU!

  2. I have no doubt that things will come together and you’ll finish it.
I also wanted to add that sometimes the brain needs a little break in order to sort things out. (For me, that usually means shaking things up…changing my schedule a wee bit, working on a new piece of writing, or art, or baking or gardening or whatever.) A short while later (maybe a few days, tops) I’ll wake up with a new solution (or even solution-s, eek.)

I’ll give you an example –
I’ve been having difficulty getting through a scene that just didn’t seem to have a flow that satisfied me. It’s a conversation mixed with inner dialogue and it needs to have the right balance or it will fall apart.
I’d shortened my writing time for a couple of days because I kept coming back to it.
Yesterday, I took the first half of my writing time off and instead called a photographer to ask her some questions for research. It was a wonderful conversation, one that I enjoyed on many levels both personally and creatively. I spent the rest of the day making notes about it and thinking about it.
This morning – my good old brain seems to have some new ideas. Hopefully they will work. At the very least, I think the new ideas will lead me to a place where I can look at the page with new eyes.

Time to shake things up, sister!
