Navigating New Seas

part of a commissioned piece

In case you have somehow escaped me telling you, I have found a publisher.

This press is small and new and in the UK. Since it was a UK literary journal that published my first short story and the BBC is my favorite channel, a British publisher makes sense really. Don’t you think?

The name of the press is Plum Tree Books.

And no, they aren’t one of the Big Six, but I was never going to find a home with them. This press has enthusiasm and vision for my writing, and I feel as if I will be taken care of, not forgotten and sent straight to remainders.

But this is a new world–being able to say I’ve a publisher. Feels impossible to say.

So, I’ve started a facebook author page, and am figuring out what’s next–oh, yeah. EDITS.

I don’t know what will happen (who does), but I’m glad to travel different waters. Thank you to everyone who’s still with me.

P.S. On a side note, I’ve started an online series–The Princess Detective. (For the reader who likes stories of princesses pursuing danger.)

  1. Absolutely fantastic!! I always wondered if you’d find your niche in Britain. There’s not a person in the world who deserves to find publication more than you do, Marta. I’ll be following your progress! Congrats!

    1. I’m sure there is someone who deserves publication more than me, but I’ll take it all the same. And I’d be quite happy with life to be successful in Britain. Britain is cool. 🙂

Don’t get me wrong. Success in my own country would be fantastic, but I sometimes think that the Brits are more accepting of quirky.

Congrats! Small presses can be fantastic, and very supportive – wishing you every success on this new adventure =)

    1. Thank you! I’ve long worried that if I did get a contract with a big house, I’d just be lost in the shuffle. Plum Tree has great enthusiasm for its writers and will off so much more support.

  3. Color me delirious on your behalf. 🙂

You didn’t mention which book/project you might be doing with them, but it doesn’t matter. This is such great news!

      1. I meant to mention: it greatly pleased me that your new Facebook page identifies you as “Author” rather than “Artist.” Not that you’re not (or couldn’t be) BOTH, of couarse. But I loved that if you had to pick just one, you came down on the writing side of the fence… Very cool that you got over any lingering doubt, as if to say, Well, dammit: THIS is who I am!

  4. Congrats again, Marta! So happy for you. And I’m definitely going to be submitting to small presses. I know so many people who are so happy with their small press (Kat Magendie and Heather Reid spring to mind). The UK is a very cool place to start. You’ll probably have a lot of artistic input, if not total control, which is ideal for someone as talented as you. I think it’s a perfect match.

AS they say in the UK, it’s just brilliant! 🙂

    1. Yes, while I didn’t want to self-publish, I was worried about big houses. This feels like the happy brilliant medium. Definitely look at small presses. They care much more about their authors.

And thanks for your support too!

  5. I have a feeling that you will be treasured, valued and respected, and that your wonderful talent will have room to grow unmolested. A small publisher has to really love everything they do. It is a beginning. Who can say better than that.

      1. Thank you, Niamh. The piece isn’t new though. I did this a couple years ago, but this is the first time I’ve posted it anywhere.

    1. I feel very lucky to have found my place-especially when before I was beginning to think I had no place. I’m looking forward to see where this takes us both.

Marta, I am so happy for you. There is no telling what and where this will take your creative talents. You are very deserving because you work at your craft and you do not give up. Many blessings are sent your way….it is so nice to have a writer and artist in the family.
