The Hermiones: Audre Lorde

audrelorde

I learned of Audre Lorde in the late 1980s when I read Sister Outsider. You can learn more about here or here (where I found this photo).

Some of my favorite quotes:

When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.

It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak.
The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.
and
Your silence will not protect you.
Why is she a Hermione? She’s smart. Damn smart, insightful, and questioning. She lived on her own terms and fought the good fight. She was brave and forged a path for others to follow.
Lorde may be gone from the earth, but her voice remains. We should hear it still.
